What is a Unix Timestamp?

A Unix timestamp (also known as Epoch time or POSIX time) is the number of seconds that have elapsed since January 1, 1970 00:00:00 UTC (the Unix Epoch). It is a widely used standard for tracking time in computing.

Timestamps are timezone-independent: the value 0 always means midnight on January 1, 1970 UTC regardless of your local timezone. This makes them ideal for storing and comparing times across systems.

Some systems use millisecond timestamps (13 digits) while others use second timestamps (10 digits). JavaScript's Date.now() returns milliseconds, while many server-side languages use seconds.
